On the final day of summer holidays, I almost died.  My name is Zara Jillings, I am 16 years old. It was a king tide when my friends and I ascended the rutted clay cliffs, using twisted tree branches for hand holds as we scrambled to the top.

Nelson fills with visitors in the summer. I live here so I plan to stay home, gardening, swimming, reading in my favourite chair under the plum tree, till my work resumes in mid-January.

The story starts in Auckland where most of the backpacker story begins, it is about fun and friendship that you make along the way. It was right in the middle of the summer and we all had a calm down in our activities, perfect timing for a city break.

Day 1 (Christmas Eve): Drove out of the office carpark at 4pm – Woohoo!!! Let the Auckland staycation commence!  Licked a gelato at Mission Bay and hung out at the beach watching yachts racing in the molten silver waters near Motutapu.

Taking the road less travelled led me to love; the love of unspoilt virgin podocarp and beech forest, limestone arches and lush ferns and mosses of varying shades of green.   No longer do I think of green as one colour.

New Zealand gets a lot of rain, so we knew that attempting the central North Island’s Tongariro Alpine Crossing in January was taking a risk with the weather.

The weather was stunning; we knew it would be hot so thought a day on the water would be a good idea. We wandered down to the waterfront after a late breakfast in Queenstown’s CBD and stumbled upon the Real Journeys booking office.
