Split Apple Rock

Nestled between the gateway towns of Kaiteriteri and Marahau lies a true 'rockstar' attraction — Split Apple Rock (Toka Ngawhā). This spectacular natural landmark has captivated visitors from far and wide, drawing them to witness the interplay of sun and stone as the day unfolds.

The story behind Split Apple Rock is a mix of science and legend. Geologists propose that the split occurred during an ice age over 120 million years ago, when freezing water expanded within the rock's cracks, causing it to fracture. However, Māori legend offers a more ethereal tale, suggesting that two feuding gods, vying for possession of the boulder, used their immense strength to split it in half, giving rise to its Māori name, Toka Ngawhā, meaning ‘burst open rock’.

To experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Split Apple Rock, take a scenic kayaking, waka (canoe), cruise, or boat trip. Alternatively, you can access the site via walking trails leading to the picturesque Towers Bay.
