Auckland Nightlife

Auckland, see more than just the Sky Tower

Auckland has long been a popular tourist destination, but did you know it boasts a sprawling network of restaurants, bars and nightclubs? Nightlife in Auckland includes something for everyone, and it’s not unusual to find partygoers travelling between different parts of the city as they visit their favourite haunts.

After a day exploring the Sky Tower, Rangitoto Island or the sights of Queen Street,  leave your Auckland rental car behind and see more of the city centre while dancing the night away.

The fun starts on Queen Street

To start your evening, why not park at Durham Lane and head to the Ding Dong Lounge on Wyndham Street - a must-visit on Friday and Saturday nights. Next, take a stroll to the Britomart precinct, which is just a short walk away, popping in for a coffee first at a family bar on Vulcan Lane. Head down Queen Street (past Shortland Street) onto Fort Street and take a left down Fort Lane. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot a heritage building or two on the way. Here, you’ll find Orleans Restaurant the perfect place to enjoy live music events. Before moving on to the next area, pop in at Tyler Street Garage to taste a delicious meal with friends.

With its views over Waitemata Harbour and the gulf islands, the Viaduct is the only place to watch the sun go down at night, with an eclectic mix of lively bars with outdoor seating. If you miss the familiar vibe or local town bars, you’ll love Danny Doolans and O’Hagans Irish Pub, both of which have a dance floor to enjoy after a long work day or any other night of the week.  Other popular places near Viaduct Harbour include the famous bar, Dr Rudi's Rooftop Brewing Co. With an extensive cocktail bar and mouth-watering bar snacks, it’s popular with locals and the after-work drinks crowd.

Cocktail bar? Night club? The choice is yours.

Ready to party? Dance the night away at the city’s renowned clubs, hosting some of the best DJs in Auckland. Home to free entry nightclubs with resident DJs, late night coffee spots and vibrant gay bars, Karangahape Road, or “K Road” is one of the best places in Auckland to let your hair down. Be sure to stop at Caluzzi, the best drag queen cabaret in New Zealand that holds regular events and party bookings.

Get off the beaten track at Grand Central

Ponsonby Central and in particular, Ponsonby Road, is another great place to explore, with charming restaurants and cosy bars to enjoy a quiet beer. Don’t forget to explore the bars and nightlife outside the main thoroughfare or you’ll miss hidden gems like Grand Central Bar - one of the best bars outside the CBD.

Note: While experiencing the city nightlife is a must on any visit to Auckland, Omega Rental Cars discourages driving under the influence of excess alcohol. Drink driving is a crime in New Zealand punishable on first offences by up to 3 months imprisonment or a fine of up to $4,500.00, and mandatory disqualification for at least 6 months. A large number of taxi companies operate in Auckland, and an Uber is never far away, so leave your Auckland hire car behind and drink responsibly.
