Kaikōura

Pull over safely, enjoy the view and then continue north as the landscape begins its gradual transition towards Marlborough.

Blenheim

After miles of rugged coastline, broad valleys begin to open up, and neat rows of vines begin appearing beside the road. Blenheim sits at the heart of one of New Zealand’s most famous wine-producing regions, so this is one stop where wine tasting can easily become a bigger part of the itinerary. Join a wine tour if you’re staying locally, visit a cellar door or find one of the region’s excellent restaurants for lunch.

Picton

The final approach to Picton winds through forested hills before dropping towards the harbour and the blue-green waters of the Marlborough Sounds. Once you arrive, take some time to explore the waterfront, marina and cafés. 

If you’re staying a little longer, head out onto Queen Charlotte Sound by cruise or kayak, tackle one of the nearby walking trails or visit the Edwin Fox Ship and Visitor Centre to see the world’s second-oldest surviving ship and learn about its long history.
