Be prepared for dramatic hairpin turns, wide-open views, and loads of “whoa” moments. Just keep in mind that if you take this drive in winter, you may need snow chains fitted to your Omega rental car.

Make time for a stop at the Cardrona Hotel. This legendary hotel and bar is one of the most photographed in the country! Once you arrive in the lakeside town of Wānaka, you can keep things chill with a stroll along Lake Wānaka or lace up your hiking boots and take on Mt Iron for panoramic views across the basin.

On a clear day, Aoraki / Mount Cook dominates the skyline. Once you arrive, head into Mount Cook National Park to stretch your legs on one of the walking tracks. Even if you don’t head out on the water, a walk along the peninsula will likely reward you with seals lazing on the rocks and awesome views in every direction.

Something to keep in mind: if you’re sensitive to choppy water, having motion sickness tablets on hand can be a trip-saver!

Nearby Huka Falls delivers one of the most impressive water shows in the country, with thousands of litres of water surging through a narrow gorge every second.

From here, it’s an easy drive to Rotorua, where the scent of sulphur in the air signals you’ve arrived somewhere very different. Rotorua is known for its geothermal activity, unique Māori culture, and immersive experiences, making it a great place to settle in for the night and explore.
