National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy

Situated in the historic Torpedo Bay in Devonport, the National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy tells the story of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s past. The Navy Museum plays a crucial role in preserving the Royal Navy’s physical, social and cultural heritage.

Through its exhibitions, events, tours and educational programs, the Museum aims to educate visitors about the vital role the Navy has played in the development of New Zealand. A visit to the Navy Museum is a must do for all New Zealanders, both young and old.

Historical Collections

The National Navy Museum holds a diverse collection of objects showcasing the history of the Royal New Zealand Navy including weaponry, personal possessions, swords, naval clothing and uniforms, ship items and more. Each artefact in the collection tells its own intriguing story or plays a part in relaying a much larger story about the Royal New Zealand Navy.

The museum also features artwork, including some by Colin Wynn, who became the first official artist of the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1982.

The museum’s photographic collection is also a highlight. You can find interesting images depicting the history of the New Zealand Navy, collected from a variety of sources including veterans and their families, official photographers commissioned by the Navy, and current sailors displayed throughout the museum’s galleries.
