Chris Dore is an internationally renowned fly fishing guide based in Queenstown, New Zealand. He specialises in fly casting tuition and guided fly fishing trips in the Southland’s beautiful rivers and streams. In 2006, Chris became one of the first New Zealanders to become a Federation Fly Fishers (FFF) certified casting instructor. As an FFF Certified Casting Professional, Chris is qualified to teach, improve or correct the casting technique of anglers at any level of experience, from beginners to the most advanced fishers. These rivers and streams are his home waters – so naturally, Chris has spent many years exploring all they have to offer. His skills, experience and extensive local knowledge are a truly valuable asset to any angler hoping to have a successful first time fly fishing in Queenstown.

Fly Fishing Guided Trips
Chris offers a variety of trip options for anglers to choose from. Many of Queenstown’s rivers and streams are accessible via 4WD as day trips, half-day trips, or may be included in a multi-day itinerary. Chris is one of those rare anglers who can always locate fishable water, regardless of the weather conditions. The typical day trip allows for about 7-8 hours of fishing time. Travelling times to the fishing areas vary according to the conditions, but generally take between 30-60 minutes to drive each way.
A Multi-Day Safari is an excellent way to experience full beauty of Southland’s diverse fishing areas. On a multi-day trip, anglers are invited to stay overnight at a selection of cosy cabins, farm stays, bed and breakfasts and cool country hotels, which are all conveniently close to the fishing spots. Staying close by provides more flexibility for dealing with the region’s unpredictable weather conditions and also reduces travelling time significantly, allowing anglers to make the most of their Queenstown fishing experience.
Heli-fishing options are also available for the most adventurous anglers. Helicopter-accessed fly fishing is a unique chance to venture into waters rarely fished by most anglers. This style of fishing is not so much about finding the largest trout or catching fish in big numbers – rather, it’s all about the experience of fishing in remote waters, surrounded by the breathtaking views of usually inaccessible mountain valleys. Heli-fishing can be arranged as a day trip or incorporated into a multi-day trip with an option to camp out nearby.
