Not only is the shopping superb, but the old Auckland Customhouse building that is home to T Galleria is in itself quite fascinating. You will find it on the corner of Customs St West and Albert St, one of Auckland's finest remaining late Victorian buildings, it is registered Category One by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
Originally built as a government office building in 1889, the customs department occupied the largest offices on the ground floor. It was one of a group of substantial buildings constructed during the 1880s and 1890s in the waterfront area. These included offices or warehouses for organisations associated with the wharf and port including the Auckland Harbour Board, shipping and ferry companies, exporters and importers.
Photographs and historical notes from this era are on display inside T Galleria, so while some of you may visit to shop, others may simply wish to browse and soak up the history and the atmosphere.
The customhouse building has undergone a major refurbishment that stuck carefully to original design concept, and ongoing improvements are being made.
T Galleria by DFS is open 10.30am – 9.00pm daily, with parking close by in the Downtown Carpark. Pick up your Auckland rental car from one of Omega’s two Auckland branches and visit this and many other Auckland attractions.
